When I was growing up, I fought my parents every step of the way on how I dress. I always wanted my shorts shorter and my shirt tighter. I didn't understand why I couldn't dress the same way that other girls my age dressed, and honestly I resented my parents for a long time for that. Now that I am older, I recognize what my parents were trying to teach me: cover up for God's sake (literally!).
When Ben and I first started dating, he wasn't exactly used to a girl who didn't put it all on display. It honestly confused him at first! But once we got serious, he grew to appreciate that I didn't put all my goods on display for every other guy in the world to see. And now that we are married, he appreciates that even more! He certainly doesn't want some other man seeing things that should be reserved for only him!
I know alot of people look at the phrase "Modest is Hottest" as a bad thing, because it suggests that we should still be seeking that sexual attention from men. But I really think its true. Modest really is so much more attractive on so many levels! First of all, I SO don't want to see your gut hanging out because you bought a shirt that is super tight so you can show your ta-tas! Ladies, hear me when I say this PLEASE: BUY CLOTHES THAT FIT!!! Size truly doesn't matter, so PLEASE go up a size if it means that your clothes fit. Muffin top is NEVER ok!!! It makes you look bigger instead of smaller (I cant believe this isn't simple logic...). I'm not saying that you need to wear clothes that are baggy. Fitted is totally ok-just leave something to the imagination!
Coco Chanel said it best: "Fashion has become a joke. The designers have forgotten that there are women inside the dresses. Most women dress for men and want to be admired. But they must also be able to move and get into a car without bursting their seams. Clothes must have a natural shape."
Another way to stay modest is to layer your clothing. Whether you put a cami under a low cut blouse our a sweater to keep yourself covered at work or an undershirt to keep your stomach from showing: layers are a good thing! And it helps that it is so totally in style to layer your clothes!
I hope that this rant makes sense. The moral of the story is: keep it classy, y'all!
And onto WHAT I wore:

I LOVE your fashion philosophy. As a mother of two young daughters, I think it's important to set this example for them. My fourteen year-old has no desire to wear short shorts, skirts or anything tight. It is possible to look great in something without letting it all hang out. I love your outfit!
ReplyDeleteThanks Alison! It has taken me a long time to get there, but it really is so much easier to get dressed when you dont put that pressure on yourself!
DeleteHow nice to know that my training of your younger days has paid off! The good thing is that, although you didn't always like our rules, you were usually cooperative. i enjoy seeing the combinations that you pull together. Keep setting a good example for the ladies who see you.
